Droid 3 Reviewed…Uh-oh… June 14, 2011 2 Comments

Droid 3 from XDA ChinaLooks like XDA China has gotten their paws on a Droid 3 early…And the reviews aren’t as good we hoped. While the processor performed well, and the new version of Motoblur is definitely a go, it looks like Motorola skimped in a couple of all too important areas.

First, the screen. Motorola has apparently outfitted the Droid 3 (or Milestone 3, depending on what country you live in) with a Pentile screen. This same screen has gotten negative reviews across the board, as you can basically see pixels (not actual pixels, but that’s how it appears) once you zoom in at all to something like, say, a website. Video is also particularly bad on these. An even bigger deal though, and frankly an extreme disappointment, is the internal spec that’s lacking.

The Mac App Store IS coming in January! December 20, 2010 No Comments

Mac App Store Stock ImageYou may remember our post from a little over a week ago speculating that the Mac App Store may be coming to Macs as soon as January. Well as it turns out, it is! Apple has released an official statement confirming that the Mac App Store will open for business on January 6th. Apple’s official press release is included below, but the main points are as follows:

  • Available on January 6th, 2011
  • Updates for apps are delivered through the App Store, just like on other iOS devices, making it easy for developers to update, and easy for users to stay up to date.
  • The Mac App Store will be for Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6) users and up, so if you’re still running Leoapard, its time to upgrade!
  • The Mac App Store will be a free download to Mac users.
  • Purchased apps can run on all of your personal Macs.
  • Developers wil get 70% of the earnings, Apple will get 30%, giving developers plenty of incentive to get their Apps in the store.

I’m interested to see how they’re going to implement the “Purchased apps can run on all of your personal Macs” part, as transferring other things from computer to computer that you buy from the iTunes store (ie. music and movies) has historically been a challenge, but here’s hoping one copy of software will be good on all my computers!

Are you excited for the App Store? Do you prefer downloading software or having a CD or DVD backup just in case something goes wrong?  Let us know!

Galaxy Tab Pricing Announced, Becoming Available As We Speak November 1, 2010 1 Comment

Verizon finally got official with the Samsung Galaxy Tab last week, and actually surprised quite a few of us in the tech world.  The Tab, Samsung’s answers to Apple’s iPad, will start at $499 for the wifi-only version, with a 3G version coming in at $599.  The surprise here is that while the storage options are comparable to the iPad’s, the screen size is not, coming in at 7″, or 3″ less than the iPad.  This is basically the reasoning behind most people’s disappointment.  You would think smaller screen should equal smaller price, but that, apparently, is not the case.  (Besides, like Steve says, size doesn’t matter.)

Setting aside the pricing, the Tab seems to be a cool device.  So while we’re still waiting on one to demo, here are our thoughts… Read the rest of this entry »

iLife ’11 Announced! October 21, 2010 No Comments

As a regular Mac user and Apple consumer I was thrilled to see Apple announce the brand new iLife. Consistent with the past, the new iLife suite will be included in new Macs, but now it is a low fee of $49 to upgrade your current iLife version to iLife ’11. The package includes a newly designed and modernized form of iPhoto, GarageBand, and iMovie, three extremely popular Mac programs used today. Let’s take a glimpse at the new software! The Looxcie is coming! October 12, 2010 No Comments

Just a heads up for those of you planning your blog reading for the next few weeks…Looks like our friends over at Looxcie are hooking us up with a brand spankin’ new Looxcie unit to review for you guys.  This means not only will we get to give you guys our impressions of a product which has just hit the shelves, but we’ll also be able to give you guys a great gallery of shots, as well as, of course, video of the Looxcie in action.  We’ll be sure to provide video and our impressions of it in use, as well as the video we took with it, so you can really get a feel for how it performs.

For those of you who may not have heard of Looxcie, it’s basically billed as a super awesome life caster.  Life casting means showing people, on video, life from your perspective.  Whether your doing extreme sports, reviewing a unit that you’re holding in front of you, or having a conversation; if you record it and post it from your perspective, that’s basically the essence of life casting.  Looxcie aims to make these types of activities super easy, and most importantly, far more natural than it used to be.  (I honestly just can’t wait to do video reviews with the thing, as they dealing with cameras while playing with a new gadget can get super annoying.  And don’t worry, Steve’s new Droid 2 will definitely be getting the Looxcie treatment ASAP!)

For more info, check out Looxcie’s site here, and be sure to check back in a couple of weeks for the full review!  What would you use the Looxsie for?  Think its something you’d be interested in getting?  What about for its list price of $199?  Let us hear it in the comments!

Steve Got The Droid 2! October 11, 2010 No Comments

Hey ITK community, it’s Steve and I just wanted to let everyone know that I chose to get the Droid 2! A while back I published an article comparing the Droid X, Droid 2, and the Droid Incredible. Well today is my birthday and I decided to pick up a Droid 2, which I absolutely love! The Droid X’s size was too big for my skinny jean style and the Droid Incredible lacked the QWERTY slide out keyboard. For me, the decision was quite simple, so check back soon for a full, in-depth review of the Droid 2!

Which Droid do you have? How do you like it? Tell us in the comments!
